The Conference SGML Technology 1996

The amazing development of the Internet, the tightening of governmental budgets and the globalization of the economy force everyone to seek the gains expected by the new information technologies.

Some of the best hopes to achieve those gains are due to the application of international standards for coding documents. More than other technologies, the SGML standard, the HYTIME standard and those developed within different CALS projects offer the possibility to manage, exchange and reuse easily the information capital of our organizations and enterprises. These standards also play a key role in strategies for effectively disseminating information on paper, CD-ROM or the Internet.

The guest speakers are among the most knowledgeable in their field. Collectively, they offer an exceptional opportunity to learn about the most recent solutions to document management challenges of today and tomorrow.

This conference will interest all information professionals. It is of special interest to

- those in charge of document management in the government and large organizations
- managers who disseminate or are considering disseminating large documents on the Internet
- computer scientists, librarians and technical writers
- those interested by electronic marketing and more generally electronic transactions

Luncheon address by Dr. Charles Goldfarb

Sponsored by Active Systems, Inc. and Lockheed Martin Corporation

No one better than Charles Goldfarb, the intellectual father of SGML, can assess the current impact of SGML, the benefits that this standard presents and the promises that it holds for the future.

Those who wish to learn about the most recent analyses from the most prominent SGML specialist should not miss this session.

Registration to the luncheon address by Dr. Charles Goldfarb is available separately or in addition to the conference.

SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language, ISO 8879).

SGML is a standardalized markup language, designed to identify structural elements in a document. SGML offers the following advantages: it simplifies the preparation of documents and facilitates their exchange, by isolating them from the specific aspects of the various document processing software; SGML allows the validation and filtering of documents; SGML makes it possible to design better searching engines.Consequently, the information capital is thereby protected from obsolescense resulting from the rapid evolution of information technologies

HyTime (ISO 10744).

The HYTIME standard increase considerably the possibilities of SGML from the viewpoint of hypertext and multimedia. However, the interest of HYTIME is not limited to those domains. For instance, many foresee the potential of HYTIME for the conception of standard electronic forms and workflow management.

CALS (Continuous Acquisition and Life Cycle Support).

This project was initiated by the United States Department of Defense to establish standards aiming at ensuring more efficiency in the production, management, exchange and reuse of electronic data relatives to different products and systems used by the Army. Today, CALS is neither uniquely american nor uniquely military. The principal CALS project of the american army is now called JCALS (Joint Computer Aided Acquisition and Logistics Support)
