Treaties Search by their Reference

The locating method for Canada-US treaties vary depending of the publication source of each treaty (see description of the collection). To access the text of a treaty for which you know the complete or partial reference, choose the appropriate Series first and then enter the locating information that you possess in the other locating fields, Volume [or year], Number or Page.

It is never necessary to fill all the locating fields. It depends of the selected collection. The following table indicates for each collection, with the help of examples, the relevant fields to fill in order to find a document.

The irrelevant locating fields are ignored by the search engine, and therefore filling them is of no consequence on the search results.

 

Series

Select in the pop menu the initials corresponding to the series containing the searched document, such as:

CTS (Canada Treaty Series);

CUS (Treaties and Agreements affecting Canada in force between His Britannic Majesty and the United States of America (1814-1925));

TIAS (United States Treaties and Other International Agreements);

BSP (British & Foreign State Papers);

UNTS (United Nations treaty series);

BTS (British Treaty Series); or

[Unclassified] (The treaties that were unedited when this site was put online were grouped together under this name, witch has no official status).

 

Volume [or year]

Enter the volume number, in Arab numeral.

The volume numbering can be constituted of an arbitrary group of digits (BSP and UNTS), or a set of four digits wich represents a civil year (CTS, BTS and [Unclassified]). Please note that the locating year should not be mistaken for the year of signature. To search a treaty by its year of signature, one must use the field search.

Number

Enter the number given to the treaty by the editor of the series.

Page

Enter the page number where to find the treaty in its volume.
